Mask mandate lifted in Illinois, easing tension over “mask discrimination” and double standard
On January 24, 2022, a Long Island state judge ruled that New York’s mask mandate for schools and other public places is an illegal end-run around the state constitution. A few weeks later, Illinois Governor Pritzker announced the end of the mask mandate in February. [Reuters]
The decision of Judge Rademaker seems to have reverberated. On February 4, 2022, Sangamon County Circuit Judge Raylene Grischow issued a TRO preventing school districts from complying with Pritzker’s mandate requiring students to wear masks in the classroom. [ABC News20]

Some schools opted to “segregate unmasked students,” but more districts opted for “optional mask-wearing” almost immediately
Almost two weeks after the TRO, hundreds of school districts in Illinois, such as District 200, Arlington Heights, Crystal Lake D47, Geneva D304, Lombard D44, Huntley D128, McHenry D15, Prairie Grove D46, made mask optional way ahead of the date prescribed by Pritzker.
Glenbard District 87
Some schools, like Glenbard District 87, opted to segregate students who prefer not to wear masks. In an email to parents on February 9, Glenbard North students were given options to be in a separate room or remote learning.
“Students will be placed in a separate, supervised learning space inside the building and access learning materials digitally,” principal John Mensik said.
A week later, District 87 superintendent David Larson announced it would transition to “mask optional” effective February 22 to oblige with federal requirements.
Districts 102, 207, and 64
One of the first school districts in Illinois to transition to “mask recommended” was District 102, Maine Township District 207, and Park Ridge-Niles District 64, effective February 16, 2022.

Mounting pressure to lift mask mandate in Illinois schools
During Super Bowl, many celebrities did not observe mask-wearing. Sara Foster, daughter of composer David Foster, called out their double standard and hypocrisy because kids still wear masks in school.
“Very exciting, the Rams won, fantastic, great super bowl halftime show… “But all I can think about is that our children will go to school tomorrow masked indoors, outdoors when they are running in PE sweating and having difficulty catching their breath. They’re masked. If they take it down, they get yelled at. They’ve never seen their teachers’ faces,” Foster said.

Governor Pritzker ends mask mandate to optional
The governor set February 28, 2022, as the end date for the mask requirement in Illinois, with exceptions. While hospitals will still require masks, retailers like Walmart ends mask mandate for vaccinated employees.
