Does Lianhua Qingwen work, and is it safe for faster COVID recovery?
Lianhua Qingwen (LHQW) is a commonly used Chinese medical preparation to treat viral influenza, including the fight against SARS in 2002–2003 in China. Recent data also showed that LHQW played an active role in COVID-19 treatment.
Does LHQW work?
The US National Center for Biotechnology Information said “overall,” treatment with the Chinese herbal medicine Lianhua Qingwen for 14 days resulted in a “significantly higher rate of, and a shorter time to, symptom recovery,” according to One News, a Philippine news agency report.
It was reported that the 14-day treatment using LHQW herbal supplement for 142 patients “resulted in a significantly higher rate of, and a shorter time to, symptom recovery than the control group” of 142 patients who received the usual treatment without Lianhua Qingwen.
Lianhua Qingwen’s side effects
Imperious research should be conducted to clarify the unconfirmed effects, regulatory mechanisms, and adverse reactions of LHQW in treating COVID-19 using well-designed randomized controlled trials.
A recent study, although still inadequate, had shown the benefits of LHQW in COVID-19, especially in combination with other antiviral drugs. This review provides extensive evidence of LHQW as a complementary strategy for treating COVID-19. [Biomed Pharmacother 2020]
