Five things to do immediately after becoming a naturalized American citizen

1. Apply for US Passport

  • Apply for a U.S. Passport via USPS (Passport card for local and Booklet for international).
  • Although expediting a passport on record takes 5 to 7 weeks, there have been reported incidents that took only 1 week.

Minor child passport

  • A minor child automatically becomes a U.S. citizen after naturalization, which is called “derivative citizenship.” Even if the (minor) child is born abroad, they qualify for automatic citizenship.
  • If the child is already in the USA, they can apply for a passport through USPS together with their parent’s application.
  • A child more than 18 years old must complete the citizenship application process before applying for a passport.
